Some of Colin's novels are leaving a lasting impression, some have a bit two dimensional characters. This one is one of the very good. People motivated by loge, enduring terrible odds, having to travel half the globe before Marco Polo did that. Only thing I would loved to have seen is how or if the tribune would have been able to reclaim his social position.

Holmberg

(due to a devastating war, environmental problems??? Too far in the past to be mentioned) On the arid land some small human settlements try to survive. Lark a young woman has fled those settlements and is now standing at the entrance to a large bridge that spans a deep and dark canyon and is the route towards the ruined city of the humans of old. But when she tries to cross the bridge she is captured by the mortal enemies of mankind the trolls who have build a city hanging under the bridge as a kind of giant waspsnest.

Lark however has a secret weapon what made the Troll council decide to spare her. Also the trolls are hindered by the drought but as they can tap into the river they can survive as long as they can fight the monsters lurking in the canyon. But they cannot travel to other troll towns anymore. The trollis as is their own name for their species is a martial society but not that different from humans apart from size and skincolour. They seem more civilised in a medieval Japanese way.

Lark is desperate to find a family to call her own and tries her best to fit in.

The author is extremely good in worldbuilding. You feel like seeing the novel as if it is a movie.

There is one BUT: the ending. I can see the point the writer is making but one would expect a different reaction because of all the work done.

Definitely a 5+ star.

His father died and he is now the earl. During the war he worked with men and did a lot of spying. But he is not good at social events and entertaining the ton. A bit of a shy nerd. So how to find a woman to marry and settle down with. In his first week back but still incognito he barges into the vicar's niece he knew in the past. She would do.

In the story we see two people who have to make arrangements for their future slowly becoming friends.

It is quite a nice story that has a refreshing anti-hero as a hero.

There is one BUT.... in the beginning it is often mentioned that he would rather face a column of French soldiers than a room full of debutantes. That is UTTERLY silly to write. No one would prefer mortal peril. It would have been easy to say something as "send to join the British army overseas" or something.

What makes me still give it 4 stars out of 5 is the sympathetic and realistic person Gabriel is.

It is 1941 and the United States have not joined the war yet but that does not mean the Seven Seas are safe sailing for a neutral tramp. Captain Jake
Rogers, a man with a history, experienced in running his tramp steamer through U-boat-infested
waters to transport vital supplies and contraband to the highest
bidder, takes on his most dangerous cargo yet when he docks in Amsterdam.

As I am Dutch the description of our capital in those early years of the war is interesting as it is only after like a year the real feeling of being under the Nazi boot became clear. It also feels like the writer spent time to do his research as unlike in other books I do not see Dutch anomalies. Another thing what must have been weird in those days was meeting German officers who had studied in the States and now were more and more becoming "the enemy".

The novel is a fast reading well written adventurestory.I can certainly recommend it.

4 stars out of 5

This series however is situated in 1946 in Berlin and the Germans are defeated and the city is divided in four zones.

What I extremely liked was the historical setting. The town is a heap of rubble. You cannot find an adress as there are no streets left. The policedepartment is run by women and a young boy and an old man because most of the men in the fighting age are dead or in prison. The Germans are not allowed to carry guns so the women arm themselves with table legs.

It is also the beginning of the Cold War.

And what to do with Nazies that are so guilty for all the crimes against humanity? But who were professors before the war and now again. Or working in a bicycle shop. What if you have liberated Dachau?

It is a brilliant series but I was not that impressed by the ending although there might be a change for a second series.

that arose when he volunteered for the Union army. When he comes back to
her in a box instead of on his feet, those feelings complicate even
more.

Jessalyn’s mourning period is cut short when something
begins to attack the livestock in their small town, and greater dangers
begin to threaten their provincial life. Thrown together with the new
reverend, one of her own students, and a strange man somehow related to
her husband’s passing, Jessalyn must find a way to stop the evils that
threaten her husband’s first and ultimately last home.

Set in
the Southwestern home front, Huszar blends a taste of fantasy into a
startling down-to-earth world, creating a high stakes adventure for this
strong female protagonist and her band of amateur sleuths.

Amongst the Native Americans there is the legend of the Thunderbird but if you are like me from the other side of the globe that kind of cultural references go completely unnoticed. (In my case it was filed in a back drawer of ,my brain after having read a novel dealing with that legend 20 years ago and after a freshening by our friend Google). Maybe the author can start with a prologue where an old shaman is telling that story centuries before the start of the novel.

The novel itself starts off quite good but then gets a bit rushed leaving one with all kind of questions and in my case "rings a bell somehow". I found that out from the post script but make an introduction out of that because the medieval elements and the way things are explained from the viewpoint of the characters makes the book a very interesting read and then you know you are reading facts not made up nonsense. But hey I am a history lover.

(So he writes down that they walk into a pub and I had to translate that to the appropriate language of those says explanation made me smile)

The story itself is more or less two heroes fleeing all the way across an Europe that just survived the Black Death but is still in the middle of The Hundredth Years War..

While I got a bit fed up with the mad cardinal and characters are not really opening up their emotions so stay quite flat it is the historical background and the well researched locations that are really coming to life in front of your eyes giving you a time travel experience..

For instance I found out why we Dutch call a joust a tournooi.: from tournee the turn knights had to do in the group fight. I never even knew there was a group fight.

The "history book" part made me award it with 5 stars.

The Lawless Land

She and her mother sell herbs and potions and her mother is the local healer/midwife. But that life gets a lot heavier and she ends up in the slums.

The book is a good read and pictures Victorian life. The romance part is a bit "fast" and I am not sure if it is realistic in a society that was highly regulated. On the other hand it is clear he does not care about all of that and is a younger son.

4 stars out of 5

The Orphan in the Peacock Shawl

But it is gone and covered by a water reservoir.

In my country, The Netherlands, these kind of books are popular by readers of Libelle, a women's magazine. With a heroine, a woman a bit older looking for romance and handling a job. In this novel it is the owner of the bunkhouse near the lake.

Reading we get to know what happened to Al and Elin, why he came back and what he finds. That made me curious but the story itself is quite slow. It is a quiet read and not utterly interesting (for someone like me not reading "mum lit"). What interested me more is the true historical backdrop of the eviction of people from their homes to build a waterreservoir for Liverpool city. I went googling and found a lot of interesting extra material. And how this event caused Wales to rise and demand more independence. And how apologies were made.

When I was given a ARC copy by Netgalley the book was still called "the captain's wife". It is now more aptly named "the drowned village".

Pub Date

The info on Wikipedia about the village:

In 1960, a private bill sponsored by Liverpool City Council was brought before Parliament to develop a water reservoir in the Tryweryn Valley. The development would include the flooding of Capel Celyn. By obtaining authority via an Act of Parliament,
Liverpool City Council would not require planning consent from the
relevant Welsh local authorities and would also avoid a planning inquiry
at Welsh level at which arguments against the proposal could be
expressed. This, together with the fact that the village was one of the
last Welsh-only speaking communities in the area,[2]
ensured that the proposals became deeply controversial. Thirty-five out of thirty-six Welsh Members of Parliament
(MPs) opposed the bill (the other did not vote), but in 1962 it was
passed. The members of the community waged an eight-year effort,
ultimately unsuccessful, to prevent the destruction of their homes.

When the valley was flooded in 1965, the village and its
buildings, including the post office, the school, and a chapel with
cemetery, were all lost. Twelve houses and farms were submerged, and 48
people of the 67 who lived in the valley lost their homes.[3] In all, some 800 acres (3.2 km2; 320 ha) of land were submerged. A new reservoir, Llyn Celyn, was formed.

The water in the reservoir is used to maintain the flow of the River Dee (Afon Dyfrdwy) so that water may be abstracted downstream,[4] and additionally to improve the quality of white-water sports on Afon Tryweryn.

Stones from the chapel (built in 1820 and rebuilt in 1892) and other
buildings in the village were used in the construction of Capel Celyn
Memorial Chapel, designed by the Welsh sculptor R. L. Gapper with the
Liverpool City architect Ronald Bradbury, which was completed in 1967
and overlooks the reservoir at the north-west end.

Families who had relatives buried in the cemetery were given the
option of moving them to another cemetery. Eight bodies were disinterred
and the remainder left. All headstones were supposed to be removed, and
the cemetery was to be covered in layers of gravel, then concrete, but
this was not done.[3]

to where the chapel stood was completely covered in concrete.[<span title="This claim needs references to reliable sources. It is recorded on a bronze plaque in a lay-by near to the dam:

Under
these waters and near this stone stood Hafod Fadog, a farmstead where
in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries Quakers met for worship. On
the hillside above the house was a space encircled by a low stone wall
where larger meetings were held, and beyond the house was a small burial ground. From this valley came many of the early Quakers who emigrated to Pennsylvania, driven from their homes by persecution to seek freedom of worship in the New World.

Almost unanimous Welsh political opposition had failed to stop approval of the scheme, a fact that seemed to underline Plaid Cymru's argument that the Welsh national community was powerless.[7] At the subsequent general election the party's support increased from 3.1% to 5.2%.

Of perhaps greater significance, however, was the impetus the episode gave to Welsh devolution. The Council of Wales recommended the creation of a Welsh Office and Secretary of State for Wales early in 1957, a time when the governance of Wales on a national level was so demonstrably lacking in many people's eyes.[8] By 1964 the Wilson government gave effect to these proposals.

The flooding of Capel Celyn also sharpened debate within Plaid Cymru about the use of direct action.
While the party emphasised its constitutional approach to stopping the
development, it also sympathised with the actions of two party members
who (of their own accord) attempted to sabotage the power supply at the
site of the Tryweryn dam in 1962.[8]

A more militant response was the formation of Mudiad Amddiffyn Cymru
("Wales Defence Movement") or MAC, which blew up a transformer on the
dam construction site in February 1963. MAC went on to carry out a
number of other bombings in the next six years.

In October 1965 the Llyn Celyn reservoir opened, and there was a sizeable Plaid Cymru-organised demonstration. A year later, Gwynfor Evans won Plaid Cymru's first parliamentary seat in Carmarthen.
But according to some commentators, Capel Celyn did not play a major
part in Gwynfor Evans's victory: in addition to Carmarthen's long
distance from Tryweryn, they claim that Plaid Cymru's victory owed as
much to an anti-Labour
backlash in the constituency's mining communities as it did to Plaid's
successful depiction of Labour's policies as a threat to the viability
of small Welsh communities.[9][10]

On 19 October 2005, Liverpool City Council issued a formal apology for the flooding.[11][12] Some in the town of Bala welcomed the move, though others said the apology was a "useless political gesture" and came far too late.[13]

Louise is a barren widow of a high ranking nobleman of 30 who now has financial independence. Coming from a marriage of convenience to her father's caring elderly friend she now plans to go and enjoy herself. She rents a dower house in the country and befriends her widower neighbour who is in his early forties. Although his wife is dead for many years he still is totally in love. The two neighbours get on fabulously and become fast friends. They discover a dead body in her wine cellar. Investigating they also discover other crimes and a lot better knowledge of their own pasts. The way they see the world and they feel things is very realistic developed.

The book is beautifully written and the characters very sympathetic and easy to identify with. It is a layered story with different storylines interacting and interesting secondary characters. The writer is good in picturing the scenery. you can almost see the houses and the village

I recommend this mix of several genres.

It is a book you hate to finish. Luckily there are sequels around other family members.

Read for free with Kindle Unlimited

What a great read. When a new judge travels to Wakefield in
Northern England he meets Robin Hood the outlaw. A playful use of known
names from the legend of Robin Hood to create a great detective story
during the rule of gay king Edward II two centuries after the legend is

Suspicion lands on a young slave girl but then more bodies are found.

The author creates a very believable heroine and is extremely good at world building. Things like slavery, the recapture of freed slaves, addiction, having to marry rich it all plays a role. The solving of the crime is a complicated story.

There are two small faults: I believe in two cases the story has a small "deleted part" as someone is shot and another engaged without it being mentioned prior. Or I must have missed that.

I am certainly going to recommend this book on my blog and in my bookclub on Facebook.

Oggins a Ramage Hawk is described as a young bird that has just left the nest to sit on a nearby branch. In this novel there is a woman who is leaving her nest to go and stay nearby. That is the problem falconer Thomas has to solve on a rural estate in Elizabethan England. He has to find a missing daughter. In the meantime however a killer is on the loose looking for Drake's gold.

The author manages to draw us into his world of rural England of the common people. It is a colourful and entertaining detective although sometimes we have to figure out ourselves why people did what. What surprised me was the less rigid line between the classes compared to for instance the Victorian Era.

I really liked it.

What happened there was never disclosed. As the daughter of the sponsor of that expedition she wants to discover the truth. I think the story gives a harrowing account of the mental stress the sailors endured during the years on convoy duty. His ship is gone and the world has changed. People pity him but he refuses to capitulate to life's injustice and buys a small ship with his overdue pay. With a small crew he uses the ship for island hopping near the Indonesian Malay border.

People think him a symbol of colonial past in his long trousers formal uniform not realising he does that to hide how extremely thin he became in the camps. Instead he is an man open to people from different backgrounds himself born and bred in China and willing to give Chinese sailors a chance to become officers. But some people have a chip on their shoulder. And some actions have devastating results.

The story feels extremely real and was quite moving. Diversity is a theme. Very good novel. Could have been longer.

5 stars

That chapter is the mind of the villain. But the book turned out great afterwards and I can really recommend reading it.

It is set in1920 and in New York. We get to know Ava at her husband's funeral. He was a cop who was murdered. Money issues demand Ava to find a job even with a small child. Her father boxing school owner Roosevelt will babysit and Ava wants to join the policeforce. But they only have a Women Bureau and a woman cannot be a detective. And that is what Ava wants to be.

A fast spaced, not that long novel with a lot of local and period details like the slang, the jazzclubs, the speakeasies and the maffia. That plot is nicely constructed and in my opinion not far fetched. She can box, she heard her husband talk about how he caught villains, she was a jazzsinger. So she might be a rooky but is not green.

Nice book to read over your weekend.

While he is an earl
and she is just a gentleman's daughter she is the one with money and she
rather not marries to keep her independence. What in my opinion does
not feel 19th century. Who wants to forsake love and children from the
start? Why not try and find real love? So as young people she has
conspired with him to pretend to court. But when she walks in on him
ballsdeep in a singer she breaks of their pretend tendre and their
friendship.

Six years later Charles needs money and a rich wife,
Louisa is toying with the idea to take a lover. Lots is happening what
makes the novel a bit slow but more realistic. The pair is surrounded by
secondary characters. Some of their stories are just an open ended
hint.

Somehow I would think a 1910 setting would have suited better (early feminism rising).

The cover is beautiful.

The thing is you need to pinpoint it to the place and time jut before the person died. The ideal candidate seems Julius Ceasar. So he adds to his team a historian and a Latinist.

The story is entertaining although there is a bit a dip in the fast pacing halfway. The writing is done well. But in my opinion there are also some flaws. When you would see Julius Ceasar in the flesh would you not first notice how he looks? Nowhere is a description of that. Is he tall? Does he have hair? Would you not want to ask things? And also some things do not become clear to me like why a couple breaks up and why one of the women chooses a husband while I would have thought another one was more to be expected.

Without trying to be arrogant I think a few alterations would benefit the overall result.

The love for and trust in Brutus Ceasar has however is very movingly described.

Four stars out of five.

The novel will be published on the Ides of March (Ceasar's death happened on that day) 2022.
